Clean Those Vents

Anyone who is fortunate enough not to have to rely on public transportation or overpriced shopping centers for that borrowed artificial cold blast of an air conditioner should check the vents before turning the a.c. on.

I had mine on for the past few days and while it did provide some much needed relief from the his heat, it wasn't giving me that really freezing breeze I was craving. After removing the front I finally realized why: DIRT! Lots and lots of dirt covering my vents.

Listen, our mom's always said it. Dirt is bad. It clogs your pores, it makes your clothes stink and it makes your air conditioner work harder for less during a heat wave. A quick cleaning and a lot of yucky gunk later I turned my a.c. back on and it was a whole a new world. The air, oh the sweet blissful cool air!

So before you blast yours on full, make sure the vents are clean!

Wake Me Up Before You GoFoBo

My new obsession is finding GoFobo codes! What the heck is GoFobo you may ask? It’s this website that gives away passes to free advance movie screenings.
Movies. For Free. Now that’s a fracking deal if you ask me.
What’s the catch? Many of the screenings need an RSVP code to get the free pass…The site says they give out codes via radio stations, newspapers and other media outlets. Seriously though who has the time to monitor all those for a code.
Thanks to a combination of googling keywards and sheer luck I’ve managed to snag passes to the Internship (didn’t see, got dates mixed up),  The Heat (funnier than I expected) and the Lone Ranger (playing in July) so I guess I’m not doing too bad but I wish there was an easier way.
I will not give up. I will not back down. I will crack the Gofobo secret and find the codes to watch all the movies I want for free and then like Moses with those Big Ass Tablet Commandments I will share amongst my peeps! Until then, I will pass along the websites that give out free passes:

Before You Toss That Metrocard...

Enter any train station and find used metrocards littering the floors like discarded pennies. Which in a way they are. Most people don’t realize but lots of those thrown away metrocards have money on them.
In the past, I’ve found everything from .05 to $4.50 which alone means squat but bring them to any tollbooth agent and they’ll combine up to 4 metrocards for you. Combine enough cards with leftover change and you'll be riding the train for free!
I’ve done this dozen of times and I’ve rarely had any problems.
Before the MTA $1 new card surcharge tossed metrocards were easier to find. While people are reusing metrocards more you can still find some if you are vigilant. Check the floors of train stations, buses, or even the streets.
My advice: if you have more than 4 cards with money on them take the ones with the most money and combine those first then go combine the rest of your cards at another station! Don't bother with cards that are bent! Impossible to read and tollbooth agents won't take them!

Watch This!

When I’m feeling bored , I’ll go to my ROKU and search for movies and/or shows on Netflix…or at least I try to cause the search engine blows! Try typing a favorite actor or genre and the search feature does less than the customer service at Chase and Planet Fitness combined! Don’t even get me started on the New Release or Recently Added section because I’ll be here all day.
Luckily, I discovered InstantWatcher. More reliable than the Netflix website, it lists all the recently added and/or new releases on Netflix. Thanks to this bad boy I discovered awesome movies like End of Watch and The Hunger Games and other classics Apocalypse Now and Planet of the Apes!

Where's Your Loyalty?

I have a confession to make: I'm addicted to my Biore nose strips.

Gosh it feels good to finally admit that!

What I'm not crazy about is how fast they go! Every two months I shell out $7.99 (not including the 8.875% sales tax. Thanks NYC! :-p) for the indescribable pleasure of seeing your nose gunk on a strip. I know that's less than $50 a year but I try to live by a simple rule: Don't pay full price if you can get it free..or really cheap!

Now getting coupons for the Biore nose strips is about as easy as trying to solve a Rubik's cube. In the dark. However I did learn that about something called Biore Prove It Rewards! Basically you enter codes found inside Biore products that can be redeemed for high value coupons and/or Biore products. You can also answer daily questions for extra points. Sweet!

Turns out, Biore isn't the only company that has a loyalty program. Here's a few more:

NatureMade Wellness Rewards: Calling all NatureMade vitamin lovers! Enter codes on the side of the bottles for $3 or $7 coupons!

Kellogg Family Rewards: Hey cereal lovers. Before you throw out your Special K or Frosty Flakes boxes, check inside specially marked boxes for codes. You can redeem for high value coupons and/or other prizes.

MyCokeRewards: Ahh! One of my favorites. Redeem the codes under Coca Cola, Sprite or even MinuteMaid caps and 12 pack boxes for coupons, movie tickets, gift cards and more!

If anyone knows of any other companies, let me know. In the meantime I'm off to de-gunk my nose! ;-)

It started with a free lip gloss. There I was a twenty something girl barely out of college whose salary barely covered the rent. Living in NYC, one most expensive cities in the world and I could barely afford the dollar menu at McDonald’s (cue the violins). Then one day I received an email that would change my world…

Sephora had just opened a brand new store on 5th avenue and to celebrate was offering a free bag of cosmetics to all Sephora newsletter subscribers! Armed with my umbrella (it was raining!) I trucked it on my lunch break and stood on the seriously long line for my swag. Home later that night staring at my shiny new black cosmetic bag and all the free shiny cosmetics and lotions that retailed for $100’s of dollars I had an epiphany: The world was full of free stuff and I. Wanted. More!

Now the gravy train of goodies didn’t magically happen overnight. It took time researching forums, reading tons of articles, not to mention having my inbox spammed into oblivion but eventually I managed to learn the secrets of the freebie underground. Over the years I’ve managed to get score everything free from cosmetics, magazine subscriptions, movie tickets and even cold hard cash. I also learned how going out didn't meant spending a fortune. For the price of a metrocard, I could go out and have a good time...now I have that Black Eyed Peas song stuck in my head!

I’ll be posting tips/advice I’ve acquired over the years, awesome deals that I find and personal anecdotes from my continuing quest to score free or extremely cheap…well anything. Also, I will post free or really cheap events in or around NYC that I believe are worth checking out.

Just because you have a limited budget doesn't mean you have to have a limited life. I know. Deep. ;-)
